Here's a short blog posting that gives a couple of reasons.
1) It doesn't work in the long run.
2) It diminishes human dignity.

Agreed. I have a friend that I've debated this with several times over. Socialism *might* function if there weren't sin in the world. But scripture also affirms the value of working, earning, and being both smart and generous with your wealth.
