During the "Bush years," we heard all sorts of drivel about how oppressive the administration was, especially as exemplified in the movie, "V For Vendetta." The mantra was:
"People should not be afraid of their governments; governments should be afraid of their people."
I wonder: Is that still true? Or is oppression OK now?

It was Thomas Jefferson who said, "When the people fear the government, that is tyranny. When the governemnt fears the people, that is liberty." People who brought that up during the Bush administration were lauded as the greatest of patriots, but those who bring it up now are dismissed as traitors and malcontents. If anything, Bush feared the people (or, at least, his political opponents) too much and Obama fears the people far too little.
